Con motivo del Día Mundial de la Diabetes que se celebra el 14 de noviembre, el Consejo General de Dentistas quiere concienciar a la población de la importancia que tiene cuidar la salud bucodental especialmente entre aquellos pacientes con diabetes.
Investigaciones desarrolladas en los últimos años han demostrado que hay una relación directa entre diabetes y enfermedad periodontal y que, además, esta relación es bidireccional. De este modo, la enfermedad periodontal no solo podría perjudicar el control de la glucemia en los diabéticos, sino que la diabetes también contribuye a aumentar el riesgo de sufrir enfermedades periodontales.
Así, los pacientes con enfermedad periodontal podrían tener diabetes de tipo 2 con mayor frecuencia que aquellos con las encías sanas, teniendo además un mayor riesgo de sufrir las complicaciones asociadas a la misma.
Por su parte, los diabéticos con periodontitis avanzada tendrían un riesgo de sufrir complicaciones vasculorrenales y cardiovasculares severas tres veces mayor que los diabéticos sin periodontitis. En los diabéticos con periodontitis, y debido a la disfunción vascular generalizada asociada a aquella, la posibilidad de insuficiencia renal irreversible es de cinco veces mayor que en los diabéticos con las encías sanas.
En cuanto a los adultos con diabetes mal controlada, éstos tienen un riesgo tres veces más alto de tener enfermedad periodontal que aquellos que no tienen diabetes o la tienen controlada. Además, la enfermedad periodontal progresa más rápido en diabéticos mal controlados y, aunque con mucha menor frecuencia y relevancia, también podrían sufrir otro tipo de problemas bucales como infecciones oportunistas como la candidiasis oral, boca seca, síndrome de ardor bucal, agrandamiento de las glándulas salivales, infecciones después de una extracción dentaria, o alteraciones en la percepción del gusto.
Consejos para pacientes con diabetes
- Un buen control de la diabetes reduce el riesgo de tener enfermedades bucodentales.
- Una buena salud bucodental contribuye a reducir las complicaciones asociadas a la diabetes.
- Deberán acudir a su dentista –al menos– dos veces al año.
- Deberán extremar su higiene oral, cepillándose los dientes después de cada comida con un cepillo de cerdas finas y suaves, y un dentífrico con flúor. Deberán utilizar también hilo dental y un colutorio siempre que se lo indique su dentista.
- Ante la sospecha de cualquier lesión o alteración de la boca, deberá consultar de inmediato con su dentista.
